Banging My Head on the Desk! Writing a free Traffic Sharing Exchange

URLPromote Free Traffic Sharing Exchange

Writing a free Traffic Sharing Exchange web app to help people promote their websites.

Have you ever felt like you wanted to pound your head on the desk out of sheer frustration? That’s exactly how I felt more times than once during my recent foray into writing my first free Traffic Sharing Exchange web app design.

In fact I was so frustrated at times, I was close to putting a pillow on the desk to prevent from forming a callous on my forehead. It frustrated me to the point I would have seriously considered trading the whole ordeal for a session of hugging my cactus for comfort! All jokes aside, it was one of the most frustrating experiences I have ever had.

Self inflicted hell?

So why put myself through the self-inflicted 9th level of computer coding hell? That’s a very good question! And one that I asked myself many times whilst building this web app. Why? Because I wanted to do something good for the world. I wanted to give something back and provide a free service that could genuinely help people get some much needed free traffic to their websites.

The next question I can already hear you asking… Did I succeed in my quest to provide a free Traffic Sharing Exchange web app that actually helps people get free traffic to their websites? The short answer is: Yes I did! After 3 weeks of head pounding frustration, I finally got there!

Onion peeling or writing a free Traffic Sharing Exchange?

The complexities of the app were akin to the layers of an onion and a tree-hugging hippy’s emotions after chopping it. Whilst I don’t condone anthropomorphizing vegetables, I can now appreciate and understand the nuanced and conflicted feelings one might experience when dealing with such mind numbing levels of complexity.

What started as a simple idea, soon grew into a Uranus sized pain in my… Grass! (Note to self: I need to mow my lawns). So what made it such a challenge? Why was it so frustrating? And why did such a simple idea become so complicated? Most of the iceberg like complexity came from security concerns. Knowing that this app would soon be released into the wild and as a public facing app, all manner of security would be required.

The allure of the simple idea…

“Providing a free Traffic Sharing Exchange web app”

It spurred me on in my quest to give something back to the world. The idea really was just the tip of the iceberg. What I thought would be a quick afternoon of easy and fun coding, turned into a mammoth 3 weeks of coding slog. One thing led to another and as I would complete one function, the security consequencs would open up another layer of the complexity onion.

A walk in the park or an almost insurmountable effort?

I’m sure for a classically educated coding professional, all of this would have been a walk in the park. But for someone like myself who is a self-taught coding amateur, it seemed like an almost insurmountable effort.

There were times when I would edit the code, upload the code, test the code and nothing would change. So I’d go back to the drawing board and make more changes and add more debugging statements to write to my error log. Clear my browser cache, run in incognito mode, save it again, upload it again, yet still nothing! No changes, no errors in the log and no solution to my problem. So I would rinse and repeat, re-check my code, rewrite some functions, change my approach several times until suddenly it would work the way I foresaw it.

When it dawned on me the releif was palpable!

It wasn’t until I hit a SSL snag that it dawned on me. I had completely forgotten that my webserver was running through Cloudflare, which adds a proxy layer and web cache to your website’s DNS. All this time I had been wrestling with a cloud based DNS cache. No wonder it was taking several attempts to get my edits to propagate.

At this point, I was 2 weeks in. I had second guessed myself a hundred times. I’d even employed the services of AI to check and double check my code. That was yet another layer of sheer hell. Wrestling with an AI that would help me fix one part of my code only to subtly screw up another section without me even realizing. It was almost like the AI was intentionally sabbotaging my efforts. It seemed like there was real resistance to me releasing this web app. Like some mysterious force didn’t want me to give this to the world.

Finally its done! I almost feel like an expectant father in the delivery waiting room. Or like Mufasa when Rafiki held up Simba… “The circle of life” Gosh now I’m bursting into song! What an emotional rollercoaster! So without any further ado, I give you…

“URLPromote” Free Traffic Sharing Exchange!

Its a simple yet powerful concept that will assist you in your website promotional efforts. As you promote your site, your efforts will compound using this free system, to build you an exponentially growing source of free traffic… 4 generations deep!

Unlocking Creative Potential? Should We Trust AI?

Artificial Inteligence. Should we trust AI

Use AI to remain competitive or hold fast as the last bastion of humanity, potentially getting left behind? Should we trust AI?

Could AI really be “Public Enemy No.1”?

There is no disputing it. We are living in the era of technological revolution. AI (Artificial Intelligence) is changing the way we live, communicate and work. It seems however that the deeper we go into this AI revolution, the more uneasy some people seem to feel. Perhaps much of this distrust has been fuelled by the likes of the Terminator franchise of movies. But there also remains the fact that jobs are already being laid on the altar of so-called “progress”. So should We Trust AI?

The unease has been steadily growing. Should we trust AI?

This unease has only grown amongst the writer community of late. Thanks in part to the advent of AI based writing tools that are delivering undetectable content. Well at least they are indistinguishable from human generated text when viewed by a machine.

But most of us living and breathing human readers, can spot an AI article as quickly as you can say: “Copy-paste”.

This is mainly due to the fact that AI writing simply lacks soul. Its rhythms and nuances are machine-like, logic based, almost mathematical. It’s just too vanilla. And It could just as easily be written by a German car engineer. Rather than through the flamboyance of an artistic author like you or me.

Aren’t we being a little melodramatic?

Although some do indeed look upon AI with dread, worrying that it might replace us as human writers. We ought to take a step back before we throw the baby out with the bath water. Should we really cast AI into outer darkness? Relegating it to the place of foe, before we’ve given it even the slightest chance to potentially shine as a friend?

We’re Irreplaceable Baby

Due to AI’s lack of soul, it will never be able to fully replicate us nor replace us. It simply can’t feel the way we do. It can’t tell you what it feels like, to wake up in the morning with a head still half full of sleep. Craving that morning cup of coffee.

The sensation you experience as your lips meet the rim of that mug and you take the first sip. AI might happen to know, through its assistant microphones… That as we take that first sip, we let out the almost involuntary expression of “Ahh”. But it really has no idea why.

How about the euphoric feeling as you walk out into the morning air. The sunlight dancing upon your cheeks, as you breathe in the morning freshness. The contrast of cool air and warm sunlight instantly makes you smile. You feel alive because you are alive!

Need I even mention the moments when your watching a movie, so well directed and acted, that you find yourself welling up in tears. That’s what we know and feel. That’s something a machine will never know and never feel.

  • So are we justified in feeling threatened?
  • Should we abandon our dystopian fears to the wind?
  • Should we trust AI?

These are all valid questions that are still begging to be answered. Tell us what you think in the comments section.

Don’t worry about tomorrow, today has enough trouble of its own

As writers who are amateurs and professionals alike, we have an opportunity to acknowledge, harness and utilize AI services. We can deploy them as helpful tools assisting us to enhance our skills and create new opportunities to express ourselves.

From improving writing performance, to inspiring creative vision

when we’re trying to write the proverbial golden goose article, that just keeps on laying the golden eggs.

Image created with www.kittl.com

AI provides the potential for us as writers to excel beyond what we otherwise would. In a fast paced, quick changing, competitive environment, it could potentially give us the edge we need to truly shine.

Streamlining the Writing Process to produce better content

AI services like Koala.sh and Blogify.ai are revolutionizing writing processes through the automation of what we have always had to do the hard way. The research, the collation, fleshing out the article structure, dividing paragraphs, spell checking, adding subheadings in the right places. These otherwise menial tasks can now be automated with the aid of powerful AI algorithms.

Their use can provide guidelines, propose amendments and even automate the entire writing process. Adding AI generated images, headlines, article layout and even providing filler content.

The writers who utilize these tools can work more efficiently,

save time, and then focus on replacing the filler content with their own exceptional writing, changing out the soulless AI placeholder headings for their own catchy well thought out headings. Replacing the machine like paragraphs with their own stories and real human experiences. Adding the human touch, adding their personal flare, their unique style, their panache and their passion.

Better than a spell checker! AI can actually enhance our writing quality

Another area that AI tools can help us truly shine, is in the area of writing quality. Among the AI-powered tools that are accessible for improving the quality of writing are Grammarly, Quilbot and Otter.ai. Whether it’s correcting grammatical errors, increasing readability, or transcribing oral materials into text.

These AI services are powerful companions

They are services that can actually help us writers on our journey. Through their use as authors, we’re empowered to sharpen our prose, perfect our style, and ultimately engage our audiences with better crafted, more engaging content.

Unleashing your creativity! Loosing the shackles of the mundane

The creativity and innovation AI brings to writing has moved beyond conventional writing assistance. Websites such as Anywords.ai allow writers to use AI-generated prompts to develop new ideas and move past writers block. Then you have AI art generators such as Kittl which is like Canva on steroids.

AI music composers, photo upscalers like ImgLarger which is able to upscale an image to 8K resolution with no degradation in quality, thanks to its advanced AI algorithms.

And Text-to-Video services like Invideo which open up all sorts of new avenues, easily adding the edge to your articles or blog posts.

And then you have the likes of Wondershare who offer a complete suite of AI tools. Everything from Filmora which is their flagship video editing product to PDFElement which is their impressive PDF editor are now all impregnated with their powerful iteration of AI functionality.

All of this enables us as writers to explore diverse types of creativity apart from the usual text-based content.

These tools not only expand the field of creative input but also inspire us as writers to be more experimental. Expanding our opportunities to cross the limits of our craft. The utility and functionality they provide can quickly turn an otherwise dry article, into an information powerhouse. Filled with relevant images, videos and even music to match the overall feel of the article.

After looking at these benefits, the elephant, whilst now nicely dressed in a pink tutu is still delicately pirouetting across the room: Should we trust AI?

Do we use AI to remain competitive? Or do we hold fast as the last bastion of humanity, potentially getting left behind in the process? Perhaps we need to look at what else AI is able to offer.

Fostering collaboration and accessibility for those who need it most

AI driven collaborative tools like otter.ai give way to smooth communication and coordination between writers, editors, and stakeholders. Through digital meeting, interview and brainstorming transcription. These technologies make sure that the valuable ideas and insights are recorded accurately no matter where people are.

Services like…

  • VoiceOver: The screen reader directly integrated on iPhones.
  • TalkBack: The equal of VoiceOver but for Android smartphones.
  • Siri: iPhone’s famous virtual assistant.
  • Cortana: The virtual assistant made by Microsoft and used on Windows.
  • Google Assistant: Google’s app activated by voice control, and integrated in Google Nest speakers and Google Home products.

These are all services and devices that utilize the power of AI to provide greater accessibility and inclusivity to those most vulnerable amoungst us.

Dispelling misconceptions, sure! But should we trust AI?

AI services, which undoubtedly bear many benefits, are still a source of anxiety for many. The level of distrust in relation to the writing profession is almost palpable. Nevertheless, it remains that AI is only an extension and facilitation of our own human creativity. It cannot and never will be a replacement for it.

Through AI collaboration, we as writers can use technology to supplement our strengths.

We can bypass our weaknesses and discover new facets of our creativity. Embracing AI doesn’t have to mean lowering our human quality of writing. Rather, it has the potential to make us as writers, more imaginative and creative than ever before, by freeing us from the more mundane, task oriented aspects of writing.

In closing, lets boost our writing!

AI services open great prospects for writers to take themselves to the next level. Producing remarkable work in a world where creativity and innovation are in a state of constant flux. By adopting AI as writers, we’re optimizing our work efficiency. We’re boosting our writing quality, unleashing our creativity and promoting our collaboration to the next level.

Take a look at this article we wrote outlining the usefulness of some of these AI tools.

It’s truly incredible what can be achieved. In a fraction of the time it would have taken to manually create the same content. So should we trust AI? Click the link below to read on.

Building Your Online Presence

Building Your Online Presence

The in’s and out’s of why a professionally hosted website matters

“If your business is not on the Internet, then your business will be out of business.”

 — Bill Gates

Who looks in the yellow pages these days?

Building your online presence in the form of a website or app is crucial these days in ensuring your business success. Long gone are the days of people using the physical yellow pages to look for your business. If people can’t find you online, they will find your competitors.

New technology for a new generation of customers

Many customers even prefer the use of online chat or email, over using a traditional phone line to contact sales and support staff. Times certainly have changed and so have the customers who support your business.

While a quick and dirty listing on Yellowpages, Yelp, Linkedin or a Facebook page might have cut the mustard at some stage, those days have indeed gone and the customers here today are indeed changing.

Getting Serious About Being Online

At some point in time you’re going to need to get serious about building your online presence. This involves obtaining a domain name reflective of your business or brand. And also securing a professionally hosted website capable of the speed and performance you’ll eventually need..

Start as you mean to finish. Go for flexibility so you can grow

Often people start out using a point and click website builder on one of the popular platforms like Wix or Squarespace. That might seem like the right option for someone starting off, however at some point you will most likely meet with success and your website traffic will take off.

Your web hosting needs will change and develop into possibly requiring software implementations such as SAAS or custom server installations. This is where people often regret having built their website on one of these more limited platforms.

Choose a Web Hosting Company to Partner With

A better course of action is to choose a web hosting provider that is able to provide the flexibility and scalability that you’ll inevitably require. You’ll want to find a web hosting company that can basically hold your hand the whole way through, without the need of potentially disruptive external server migrations.

Scalability is the key here. Whilst there’s no point paying for a high performance dedicated or cloud hosting plan when you’re first getting started. You’ll want to ensure that upgrading to this is as easy as flipping a switch or a toggle in your web hosts control panel.

Find a long term partner with whom you can grow

Do your research and partner with a Web Hosting company that you feel comfortable with and confident in building your online presence. You’ll want to find a company that you’re happy to partner with over the long term, as there is nothing worse than having to migrate to another company and face all the potential disruption to your website and your customers.

Scalability is Key in Building Your Online Presence

These days many web hosting companies offer truly scalable cloud based options where you’re only billed for the resources your site actually uses. So if you experience a huge spike in traffic, your website is able to cope easily with the extra strain on resources, without going offline.

Pay for what you actually use, not what you might use

The beauty of this, with the right web hosting provider, is that you’re only billed the extra when the spikes in traffic happen. So for example if you’re running a bookings site that only has two major events per year. You’ll pay for the smallest plan for perhaps 10 months of the year and only pay the extra for the two months where the bookings go off the charts.

The Dilemma of Site Speed

Another thing to consider when it comes to running a successful website is the dilemma of site speed.

It’s a known fact that most website visitors will only stick around for 4 seconds waiting for a website to load.

If your site takes longer than the infamous 4 seconds, then you’ll be losing site visitors before they’ve even had a chance to view your content. This can be devastating when it comes to PPC advertising, where you’re paying for peoples visits and depending on them to convert into paying customers.

Do the due diligence, do your research

Make sure when doing your research, that you look closely at the web hosting companies server speeds. One of the main factors to consider here is server location. If you’re opting for a cloud based plan, then usually this is well sorted through the use of CDN’s and globally distributed cloud servers.

Location, location, location

However if you’re opting for a cheaper shared hosting plan, you should check to see where the server is located. If most of your customers are based in the US, then there’s no point opting for a server based in Asia and vice versa.

Choose The Right Server Setup for Building Your Online Presence

Another consideration is server setup. Are you opting for a fully managed server or are you opting for a self managed VPS? While a self-managed VPS or Dedicated Server can give you the ultimate flexibility. It does mean that you’ll also need to mitigate any potential problems you may encounter.

Do you want the ease of a managed server or the freedom and flexibility of a self-managed server?

A fully managed server might add a few limitations like perhaps a choice between only 2 web server implementations or perhaps 1 or 2 operating system choices. But it does mean you’ll have some top gun experts on hand to fix the problems if and when they arise.

So many options, so many choices. Let us help you choose

It can be a daunting prospect sifting through all of the available options out there, trying to pin down the best web hosting company to partner with, in building your online presence and trying to find the one that fits you and your business the best, can be quite the task.

That’s why we’ve done some of the heavy lifting for you and reviewed some of the top web hosting companies in the business. Take a look at our quick and simple web hosting reviews by clicking the link below.

What is The Power of Forgiveness?

Forgiveness

Forgiveness has the power to truly set us free

Take a closer look at the word Forgiveness. Notice the word right in the middle, you can break it down into its parts: For-give-ness or for-given-ess. The revelation staring us right in the face here, is the fact that you can only give forgiveness, it can only be given and can never be taken. No one can take your forgiveness from you. No one can force you to forgive. Therein lies the power of forgiveness.

Forgiveness isn’t so much a release, or a get out of jail free card for the perpetrator. It is however, true freedom for the victim. When we forgive somebody we effectively set ourselves free. That’s the power of forgiveness.

Free from the hurt, free from the anger and free from the psychological, emotional and spiritual control that the situation, offence, abuse or affliction has held over us.

Forgiveness doesn’t let them off the hook

To forgive someone doesn’t necessarily mean that we have to trust them again. Trust and forgiveness are two completely seperate things. Forgiveness is given, trust is earned. Forgiveness doesn’t let them off the hook. They will still have to give account for what they’ve done, either in this life or in the next.

Forgiveness doesn’t set the perpetrator free. In many cases they have no idea that you’ve even forgiven them. Forgiveness does however set you free. It releases your heart from the strangle hold of the offence. It limits the damage from going deeper, preventing the hurt from developing into bitterness and in turn hardening your heart.

Keep your heart with all diligence,
For out of it spring the issues of life.

 — Proverbs 4:23 NKJV

Above all else we need to protect our heart, it’s like an inner child, the innocence within us that loves unconditionally. We protect this most vulnerable part of ourselves by consciously guarding it. Not that we should take it so far as to become guarded people, with our defensive walls up all the time.

Unfortunately, so many people, once damaged, retreat to a defensive posture and transform themselves to become like fortified castles, never to let anyone else in ever again. Rather, we are better served, to once again learn to trust people. Only this time, we need to do so according to their character, and not just by the words they speak or how widely they can smile.

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

— Martin Luther King, Jr.

A man’s character is the measure of a man

We must learn to measure people for their trustworthiness, by their character alone. It’s the only reliable method by which we can ascertain their moral fibre, their honesty, their integrity, their dependability and uprightness. To depend on them or to trust them based on anything else, is setting ourselves up for a fall, for more abuse, for heartache, and for devastation that we could do better without.

We need to remember that forgiveness is seperate from trust. Although this may be true, most of us have allowed the two to become deeply intertwined within our psyche. We need to learn to seperate them again, if we ever hope to enjoy the full freedom that effective forgiveness brings.

Trust must be earned

Just because you’ve forgiven someone, doesn’t mean you have to automatically trust them again. In fact you’d be foolish to do so. They need to earn your trust. And as we all know only too well. It can take a lifetime to earn trust and only seconds to destroy it.

When we first meet someone, we have to give them the benefit of the doubt. We’re compelled to trust them enough, to let them in far enough, that we have the opportunity to measure their character. Look for character flaws like gossip. If they gossip to you about someone else, then you can bet your bottom dollar, they will gossip about you as well. So don’t trust them with your personal secrets.

Are they hot tempered or pushy? If they are, then don’t give them your submissiveness or obedience, as they will soon walk all over you. Give them an inch and they will take a mile. Are they willing to lie to you about something small? Then they will lie to you when it really matters about the most devastating things. Will they borrow or steal the small things from you that they never repay? Then they will take everything from you and leave you destitute with nothing.

Only trust people in the areas where their character confirms that they are trustworthy. If they lack the character needed for you to trust them, then forgive them and move on.

Forgiveness is a Decision

Forgiving someone starts with a choice to do so. Try speaking your decision out loud… “I forgive ______ for what they did/said to me”. When you first say it, it will seem like you’re telling a lie. You’ll most likely feel nothing. Just coldness in your heart towards them. Say it again. You might not feel much happen at first. But believe me the release is coming. Your words are like deep cracks forming in a mighty dam. Say it again! Every time you think of them, or every time you think of the offence or the hurt. Keep on saying it and eventually that dam will break and out of your heart will flow a massive release, that truly will set you free!

For further reading on forgiveness and how you can find genuine freedom through it, take a look at “Do Yourself A Favor… Forgive” by Joyce Meyer. If it’s your first audiobook, you can download it for free on Amazon. It’s well worth the listen.

Why Bother with a Paid VPN Service? Let Me Count the Ways

The evil of Geo Restrictions

Why bother with a paid VPN service? Chalk it up to the age old wisdom: “A stitch in time saves nine”

Ahh, the Wicked Wild West of the internet. A place where your personal data is sold to the highest bidder and floats around the World Wide Web like a lost sock in the clothes dryer. Why bother with a paid VPN service? Well there’s one good reason right there. And dare I rub salt into the wound by even mentioning your favorite Netflix show. You know?! The one that has somehow become like the proverbial unicorn, available only in mystical lands on the other side of the flaming planet. Ohh yes, that’s another great reason.

I’m so over it! And I’m sure you are too. Normally I’m the kinda guy who will pay for your lunch, buy you dinner, shout you to the cinema, I’ve even been known to give the odd car or two away. Actually I’m up to my fourth but that’s not my point and that’s another story.

Am I just cheap?

I relish buying expensive things, because I can. And the thing is, I seem to have no problem giving those things or even thousands of dollars away. But ask me to spend two or three dollars a month on a VPN and I’ll be telling you to take a hike!

Why do I seem to have such an aversion to spending a tiny bit of my hard earned cash on such an important thing? I think as one of the Gen X’ers who grew up with the invention of the internet transforming our lives. I seemingly became used to getting everything I wanted from the internet for free.

Free this and free that. There were the glorious days of Napster, for all the free music you could muster. Then Limewire too. There were free product samples in every direction. It was free samples galore! And almost whatever you needed online, there was some company offering it for free in exchange for your precious Compuserve or Netscape address.

I know, I know, there’s no free lunch

At the end of the day, as we all already know, there’s no such thing as a free lunch — unless of course I’m the one buying it for you. But for the most part, you certainly get what you pay for. And if you’ve ever tried using a free VPN then you’re already well aware that you’re getting what you paid for. That’s right, pretty much nothing!

You’re getting no real value from a free VPN, as the people who run them have to make a living somehow. So they’re either selling you ads, or selling your data or perhaps much, much worse, in some cases they can be intercepting your tunnelled traffic, viewing it in an unencrypted state and then exploiting your passwords and other high value targets such as crypto deposits or banking credentials.

So what and where does that leave us? At some point you just have to come to terms with it, and realize that the minuscule cost of a good VPN, is simply part of the cost of doing business these days on the internet. A paid VPN service promises to encase your online activity in a safely encrypted tunnel, shielding you from cybercriminals and geo-restrictions alike.

Why do we really need yet another subscription?

So why bother with a paid VPN service? Is a paid VPN really necessary? Why should we bother with such a service? Allow me to whisper a few ghost-like stories with you over the cyber campfire. Stories of ransomware nightmares and Netflix-induced geo-restriction rage.

Let’s begin with everyone’s favorite horror scenario: Ransomware attacks! Consider for a moment, you’re casually scrolling away on your computer, not a care in the world. Perhaps looking for a nice new recipe or catching up on the latest cat memes. When you’re rudely interrupted with a screen that has suddenly taken over your computer. The sheer terror grips you as you realize the ramifications of what has just taken place. The belligerent message demanding Bitcoin payment, coldly confirms it.

Congratulations! You have just become the next accidental star of your own ransomware horror flick. If only you had paid the two or three measly dollars and got that paid VPN service. The one that includes anti-virus and anti-malware. Your data would have been encrypted and your online actions would have been kept private from those prying eyes.

Suddenly, these cyber criminals’ threats would have been as useless as a one-legged man in a butt-kicking contest. Although nothing these days is foolproof, having a decent VPN and an online security package can make a huge impact for your online safety. Trust me, receiving a warning that the software you’re trying to install is potentially infected with malware, is literally worth its weight in gold, or Bitcoin!

Yet another entertaining reason why we need paid VPNs

Now, let’s discuss the bane of practically every Netflix fan’s existence… Geo-restrictions! Doesn’t that word make your skin crawl? As I say it, as I type it, all I can picture is some pasty-white Nazi-like corporate vampire with a greasy slick comb over. No, with a middle part! Yes! A hair part right down the center of his greasy head! Spluttering saliva with his eagerness to speak it! That filthy word, forced through his pathetic gritted-teeth smile… “Geeeeeeo-restrictions”.

We’ve all been there: Filled with anticipation as we settle down for a cozy night in, only to have our balloon popped with that dreaded “This content is not available in your country” notice. Talk about tearing the heart and soul out of an otherwise great night! Shame on these greedy corporate scum.

This is perhaps the one that’s enough to push me over the edge. Will I flip the switch on the paid VPN service? It sure would be nice to simply launch my VPN, choose a server in the country of my choice, and then do what I set out to do in the first place. Watch my movie! After all, I’ve already paid Netflix for the privilege. I just need to be in the country the corporate overlords have determined, to squeeze the maximum profit out of me.

With a paid VPN subscription you can change your destination to route through whatever country you prefer, technically meaning you are watching that stream from that country. It’s potentially a very gray area, but it does mean you can watch all of the Netflix originals you want that you’ve already paid them to watch.

But wait there’s more — sorry no steak knives this time 🙂

Why stop there? There are numerous advantages to using a commercial VPN service. From protecting your sensitive data to avoiding government censorship, the options are as limitless as the internet itself.

So why bother with a paid VPN service?

Because in a world where online threats are practically everywhere and geo-restrictions are the current corporate weapon, a stitch in time saves nine. And a little digital safety goes a long, long way. So I’ve done some research and a fair bit of the due diligence for you, and looked up a bunch of details on several of the world’s best VPNs. I think it’s better to be safe and entertained than sorry and frustrated.

So, if you’re like me and are now in the market for a decent VPN service, then take a look at this quick and simple VPN review I’ve put together…

$35 per hour! How to Thrive in the Growing Space of Online Writing Jobs

Paid Online Writing Jobs

How to translate your writing skills from a low paid hobby into a well paid full-time job

Ever since the covid lockdowns of 2020 the work from home market has been somewhat cranking. Although the lockdowns are thankfully over, the appeal of working from home, earning a decent income is pretty much still crystal clear.

There’s just something about not having to constantly look over your shoulder with your boss breathing down your neck. Add to that the ability to choose your own hours and having the freedom and flexibility to no longer feel like a corporate slave. And you can see why online writing jobs are becoming so popular.

What’s more, you can earn anywhere from $25 to $35 per hour while not even getting out of your pyjamas. All while you refine your writing abilities and make an actual meaningful difference for businesses all over the world. These online writing jobs are no longer some pipe dream reserved only for the highest ranking professional writers. These days they’re open to all and perhaps fast becoming a necessity as AI begins to disrupt the traditional jobs market.

Remote work is fast becoming the norm rather than the exception. Its popularity is creating a demand for skilled writers who can produce captivating material for websites, blogs, email lists, and social media platforms. Whether you’re an experienced writer or just getting started, there’s a place for you in this burgeoning market.

Why Choose an Online Writing Job?

Well why not? What objections can you find against working from the comfort of your own home? I know some people struggle to stay motivated. This however, can be easily solved with things like having a dedicated work space, free from distractions. But that’s another topic for another day and another article.

Flexibility is perhaps one of the biggest draw cards to working from home. Say “see ya later” to the rigors of the nine-to-five grind and say “wassup” to a much more flexible timetable that revolves around you and your life and not the other way around.

These remote employment opportunities allow you to work from anywhere on the planet, as long as you have a phone or laptop and a stable internet connection. Heck, with the addition of Elon Musk’s Starlink you could literally work from the arctic circle, from Antarctica, in the Congo basin, at the source of the Amazon River, out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean or anywhere in between.

Personally I’m a little less adventurous, and enjoy working from the comfort of my living room or a local Cafe. Whether you’re a digital nomad traveling to alluring destinations or a stay at home mom or dad trying to supplement your income, online writing jobs do provide unrivaled flexibility.

No Experience Necessary — Full Training Provided

One of the most significant barriers to entry in any sector is the notorious catch 22 of requiring experience to acquire a job while also needing a job to gain experience! This is where some less scrupulous individuals are tempted to employ the populist mantra “Fake it till you make it”. While this might be tempting, it’s a huge mistake and quite frankly it’s like the death rattle before the final breath of your career’s credibility.

Many paid online writing jobs are able to remove this barrier by providing opportunities for beginners. You don’t necessarily need any prior experience; all you need is a desire to learn coupled with a passion for writing. If you’re already posting Medium articles that are receiving claps, follows and comments, then you’ve already got what it takes.

What You’ll Do — What’s Required

As an online writer, your tasks will vary depending on the demands of the companies you work with. The opportunities for creating weekly blog pieces and communicating with clients on social media are almost boundless. Full training is offered for many of these, ensuring that you have the skills and information required to succeed in your chosen online writing job.

Unlock Your Earning Potential

Perhaps the most appealing part of taking on an online writing job is the earning possibilities. With hourly rates ranging from $25 to $35 per hour, you can earn a decent living while doing what you already enjoy doing. With most providers offering an open ended contract term and fully flexible hours, you can usually work as much or as little as you like. Either as a side hustle, a part-time, or even a full-time 9-to-5 income replacing job.

Skills and Background Needed

Although no prior experience is usually required, there are a few key abilities and skills needed to flourish in an online writing job:

  • Access to a phone, tablet or preferably a laptop or desktop computer
  • Basic English reading and writing skills
  • Capacity to follow provided instructions closely — Basic attention to detail sort of stuff
  • Availability of at least 5 hours per week. There are a few jobs offering less commitment but most are at least 5 hours or more per week.
  • Reliable internet connection
  • Ability to work independently and unsupervised. You might need to develop your motivational skills or perhaps even work on your work ethic to succeed long term with this. See my article on work ethic posted below for some tips on how to take your work ethic to the next level.

7 Steps to Make Money from Free Google Sites

Making Money from Google Sites

And why Google Sites is an often overlooked source of excellent organic traffic

Your decision to click into this article “7 Steps to Make Money from Free Google Sites”, more than likely confirms that you have a quantifiable interest in earning money online. And for those of us who have already begun that journey, we know only too well that making a decent income online, is much harder than it looks at first glance. If you’ve been struggling with motivation, here’s a little audio inspiration for you 😀

You can spot an internet marketer by the scar on their forehead. 🤕

We’ve pretty much all been there. Banging our heads against the wall, trying to find a way to finally crack the online income nut! Most of us have tried blogging, ghost writing, affiliate marketing, selling digital products through online marketplaces. And the list goes on and on. If you’ve been around long enough, you’ve probably even tried network marketing or shudder to think, MLM (multi-level-marketing). And yes my skin is literally crawling from just the sheer thought of those hideous memories.

A product or a service?

In most cases, making money online means either selling a product or providing a service. Whilst providing a service has a much more potent potential to make serious money down the track. It also requires heavy upfront investment, and a lot of upfront work to get the service out the gate. So most of us turn to selling products.

To be able to effectively sell a product… We need to either create the product ourselves or sell someone else’s product for a commission. As affiliate marketing can provide decent percentages (often up to 75% of the sale price). Many of us turn to using this form of marketing to generate much of our online income.

Many people just starting out will attempt to throw up an article and just include an affiliate link or two. For the most part, if they are able to lead a reader to click on that link, 9 times out of 10 the reader will visit the sales page of the offer. And the disconnect is large enough that the reader will simply bounce from the site and not buy a thing. The click is wasted and no one (sadly including the reader themselves) benefits. You must by now be thinking, “there must be a better way.” And thankfully there is.

A better way: Pre-framing your sale with the power of a decent landing page.

For a reader to actually want to buy the product you send them to, you first need to help pre-frame their thinking. This is where the necessity of your own landing page comes in. Here you utilize the landing page as an intermediary step between your article and the affiliate products sales page.

You use that landing page to pre-frame their thinking. Outling the benefits of the product or service you’re selling. Building their desire for the product so that they actually want to buy it. You take the time here to deal with their objections, even before they actually have them. So that when they click on your “Buy Now” button. Arriving at the affiliate products sales page, they are already eager and ready to buy.

If the items you’re selling are generic in nature. And come with built in mass market appeal: Think discounted household items like Temu products. This is easily achieved by simply offering your reader a variety on your landing page. Perhaps an item from the Kitchen Items category, another from the Electronics category, another item from the Hobbies category etc. However if your product is more specialized. You’ll need to work on building up a narrative as to why they will want your product. Highlighting its benefits and how its use solves a real world problem.

The other reason we need the landing page is to collect their contact details. So that should they decide not to buy, their precious click is not entirely wasted. You can easily collect their name and email address by offering a free downloadable report. Ensure its in line with the content of your article.

Until now, good landing pages haven’t come cheap.

For this to work well. Traditionally we would need to spend the money on a domain name and some decent web hosting. Ensuring that our landing page is fast enough to retain our reader. It’s a well known fact that if your site takes more than 4 seconds to load — your precious reader will be gone! So we need some fairly fast web hosting which doesn’t come cheap.

Most people, once they have invested in the domain and hosting. They install something like WordPress to give them the flexibility to build the landing page they need. However, for many. The first obstacles of hosting fees, domain names, and the time investment necessary. For the learning curve required to successfully operate WordPress. Can seem almost insurmountable for many.

For help with this check out our article on Building Your Online Presence.

Due to this many people turn to the likes of Shopify to try and simplify things somewhat. Yet Shopify still has a fairly extensive learning curve. And can be downright difficult to edit, if you need to customize the theme. On top of that, by the time you add in all the required plugins, it’s actually quite an expensive option.

Sorry I digress, I didn’t mean for this article to become a quick course on how to sell online products. So let’s come back to why we’re here. Can we make a decent income from a Free Google Site?

Why Google Sites? Because it’s a literal goldmine of eager buyers!

Established e-commerce platforms like Shopify and Etsy have large user bases, competition can be fierce to say the least. Google Sites however fills a distinct niche: an untapped market of ready-to-purchase customers. Here’s why:

  • Good SEO: Google Sites effortlessly integrates with search engines. None more so than the king of search engines itself: Google search. It’s no surprise that Google Search seems to look favorably upon a site made on Google Sites. It’s just another way for them to keep their traffic in-house so to speak. It seems that they have weighted their algorithm to somewhat favor a well written Google Site. One that employs effective use of well placed SEO (search engine optimized) keyworded content. This ensures that your material appears at the top of search results for relevant terms. This organic traffic results in a highly focused audience with serious buy intent.
  • Micro-Communities: Unlike huge online marketplaces, Google Sites promotes a sense of community, as most visitors know you’re a small fish in a big pond and not some cold corporate shark or just another rinse and repeat Shopify or Etsy shop. Your audience feels a sense of connection with you, the person behind the brand, which helps increase their trust and the likelihood of them buying something from you if your Google site is well set up for that.
  • Niche Focused: Google Sites allows you to narrow your attention to a certain specialty. This targets a passionate and engaged audience that is more likely to respond to your call to action to buy your products or the service that you’re promoting.
  • Integrated Services: By utilizing Google’s eco-system you can incorporate other Google services for example Blogger.com to leverage the added traffic, further building your organic traffic growth.

The Untapped Potential of Google Sites

E-commerce juggernauts such as Shopify and Etsy currently reign supreme. But Google Sites has its own growing user base. According to BuiltWith Trends, there are presently over 798,000 live websites that use Google Sites. Take a look at the screen shot below and cop an eye full of the traffic stats and income generated from those on the top of the Google Sites list.

BuiltWith Screenshot image showing Google Sites usage
Author created screenshot image

Similarweb validates this traffic claim, reporting that sites.google.com received over 209,800,000 visits in February alone. This turns into a vast pool of potential clients looking for specialty products and services.

Similarweb Screenshot
Author created screenshot image

Adding to this untapped potential, (the potential that most people walking down the digital high street have completely walked past and ignored) is the realization that perhaps the best part of utilizing a free Google Sites website, is the fact that it’s still completely free to use!

This is amazing really, considering that the Google Sites servers are blisteringly fast. And the latest version of their WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor is easy, a total snap to use. Some people are of the opinion that it’s too restrictive and not flexible enough. But that’s usually because they are using one of the pre-made, included templates. If you opt for the custom template, you can pretty much edit and adapt anything.

Gosh! I’m getting sidetracked again into writing a how-to article on how to use Google sites. That’s not why you’re here now is it? Let’s get back to why you clicked on the article title.

7 Steps to Make Money from Free Google Sites

  1. Discover Your Niche: What are you enthusiastic about? Identify a problem or a market gap that you can fill. This could range from homemade products to niche consulting services. Once you know what you want to sell, it’s time to drill down into that general niche, through some decent keyword research to find a niche that 1. Has low competition and 2. Has a respectable amount of search traffic. A good free option here is the Google Keywords Planner.
  2. Create a compelling website: Whilst Google Sites does have a user-friendly drag and click interface, don’t underestimate the importance of a well-designed reader-centric website. Ensure that you provide your readers with clear navigation, high-quality images, and niche-specific content that gives them value. Write your site like it’s a fish trap. A broad open end at the top, with a juicy piece of bait for the headline. Then taper your site down, with your content becoming more and more focused like entering a funnel until the reader arrives at the only option left at the bottom. Your “Buy Now” or “Learn More” button.
  3. Monetize Your Experience: There are many ways to turn your experience and knowledge into money. Learn about effective affiliate marketing, How to structure your main article to promote your landing page, tailoring your content to pique your readers curiosity, pointing the way for them to click your landing page link. Offer digital products such as ebooks, courses, printables, NFT’s and basically anything your readers can instantly download. Or you could even head down the physical products route by utilizing drop-shipping products that are relevant to your niche.
  4. Content is King: Try to be as consistent as possible, creating insightful and entertaining articles or blog posts that establish you as an authority in your field. This fosters trust and keeps your readers returning for more. Remember to give them value, in exchange for the time that they are investing to read your article. If you’re going to use a click bait title, ensure you give them a good feed with your article. Make sure you answer the question or statement in your title and subtitle somewhere within the body of your article. Make sure you over deliver.
  5. Embrace SEO: Search Engine Optimization assists search engines to properly categorize your content so that your website appears in search rankings. Use relevant keywords throughout your content, and take advantage of Google’s own SEO features. Use Google Keyword Planner to find the best keywords to target for your niche. Don’t just focus on short-tail keywords like “online income” which have enormous competition. Utilize long-tail keywords like “how to make online income from my Medium.com articles” to reduce the competition and zero in on your niche audience.
  6. Spread the word: Remember that this isn’t the movie “Field of Dreams” where the mantra was “Build it and they will come”. Give yourself a pinch or maybe even a slap. You’re not in a movie! And although you’ll pick up a fair bit of organic traffic on Google Sites. Don’t just build it and hope people arrive. This is where you’ll need to put in some work or spend some dollars. Promote your website through writing articles that help people, posting on social media platforms, internet communities, and related forums. If the ROI (return on investment) is positive, utilize PPC (pay per click) advertising like Google Ads or Facebook Ads to bring in some more targeted traffic.
  7. Analyze and adapt: Use Google Analytics to track the success of your Google Site. By studying your reader’s pathway through your site, try to determine what resonates with your audience and tailor your content approach to fit in closer with their needs. Try using A-B tests on as many elements of your content that you can. For example, try different button colors to see which color button gets clicked the most.

Sometimes it’s easier to just see an example

Take a look at the simple landing page I threw together in about 20 minutes. It’s a simple landing page to redirect the reader to a pretty incredible 90% off sale of everyday Temu items, that most people either already want or most likely already need.

What is Love?

What is Love?

No matter the sacrifice, whatever the cost, love will not fail you.

What is love? A burning question that for some, is fully answered from the first moment they can remember until their very dying breath. Those who are blessed to be surrounded by love often have never even contemplated this question. All they have ever known is the love of their parents, then the love of their siblings, the love of their friends, the love of a spouse, followed by the love of their children. A life surrounded by love is truly a blessed life.

Yet there remain those who have somehow been less blessed. Or worse, perhaps even cursed when it comes to experiencing an uninterrupted continuum of love. For these less fortunate souls, the burning question still remains. It resonates like a gong, filling the void within their soul that was made only to be filled with love.

What is love?
Baby, don’t hurt me
Don’t hurt me no more

Haddaway (©1994)

Haddaway were edging onto something as they sang those lines. Is love simply to not hurt? Or is love more intricate, more nuanced in its complexity?

What is love?

Let us turn to ancient wisdom, there perhaps we will find the answer.

Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never fails.

1 Corinthians 13:4–8a NKJV

The above quote from the New Testament of the Holy Bible was written around the year 53 A.D. by the Apostle Paul (born Saul of Tarsus). He gives an in-depth description of what love isn’t and also alludes to what love does. But does he fully answer the burning question…

What is love?

He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

1 John 4:8 NKJV

The above quote also from the New Testament of the Holy Bible was written around the year 95 A.D. by the Apostle John (born the son of Zebedee & Salome). Here he gives an absolute corker of an answer. God is love! So from that can we permit ourselves to deduce that love is God?

What an incredible thought! I think that answers the burning question quite nicely. Personally to me it makes a lot of sense.

When we experience love, we experience something so profound and remarkable. That we can often struggle to find words to express the depth of the emotion, the unfathomably deep connections of joy, peace, acceptance, security, contentment, satisfaction, and enlightenment.

Love causes our hearts to swell, at times taking our breath away, flooding our eyes with tears of joy. And even leaving us tingling with excitement, filled with the anticipation for more.

What better way is there to describe it? God is love — Love is God! Love connects us with the divine. Love connects us with the infinite, the eternal. Love opens the door for us to experience our spiritual reality. When we love we are moving in the essence of our creator.

Now we know why love feels so good!

How else would you describe love?

Understanding Your Work Ethic

Definition of Work Ethic

As we discuss having a good work ethic, it is vital to first explain what that term means.

work ethic (noun): a belief in work as a moral good : a set of values centered on the importance of doing work and reflected especially in a desire or determination to work hard — Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Work ethic is a set of moral ideas, values, and attitudes that determine how people approach work. It includes activities that are acceptable and appropriate in the workplace. Punctuality, dependability, accountability, and dedication are all common characteristics of a strong work ethic.

Historical Perspectives

The concept of work ethic has a long history, dating back to prehistoric times. Work was regarded as a virtue in ancient Greece, and people were expected to put forth extra effort to help society. Similarly, in ancient Rome, hard effort was prized, while being sluggish or idle was frowned upon. During the Industrial Revolution, work ethic became even more crucial as factories and mass manufacturing demanded discipline and efficiency from workers.

Cultural Variations in Work Ethic

Work ethic varies among nations and societies. For example, in some cultures, such as Japan, working long hours and being committed to your work are highly prized. In contrast, certain European countries, such as France, place a larger focus on work-life balance, encouraging people to take time off to pursue recreational pursuits. Understanding cultural differences in work ethic is essential for working well with people from various backgrounds.

It’s worthy to note here that there is a stark difference between a Generation Y or a Millennial gamer, who hardly manages to tear themselves away from their gaming console in their parents basement. To an overachieving busybody who has zero life balance, makes everyone else around them feel like crap and is making strides following their personal road to a monumental burnout. The bulk of people fall somewhere in the middle and cultural backgrounds, whilst they do account for some variance, are not an excuse for either extreme. However, understanding their nuances will help us to work better with them.

Overall, developing a healthy work ethic requires an awareness of the definition, historical viewpoints, and cultural variances. People who recognize the value of work and maintain a positive attitude toward it can become more productive, efficient, and successful in their jobs.

Components of a Healthy Work Ethic

Image created with www.kittl.com

As someone who has built a strong work ethic, I feel that several critical components contribute to a successful and productive work ethic. Professionalism, responsibility, honesty, and accountability are some of these components.

Professionalism

Professionalism is an important component of a strong work ethic. It entails keeping a cheerful attitude, being punctual, dressing appropriately, maintaining personal hygiene and personal grooming and interacting successfully with coworkers and clients.

We’ve all met the guy who might dress appropriately, but absolutely reeks of body odor. Perhaps he visits the gym before work without taking a shower afterwards and has an aversion to wearing any underarm deodorant. Will this hurt his career? From a distance no. But as soon as he gets within whiffing distance to close a deal he will naturally suffer losses.

We’ve also all met the proverbial Karen, who refuses to maintain a cheerful attitude. She might be at times the best sales lady on the floor, but due to her refusal to maintain her cheerfulness, she loses out big time on so many potential sales.

Therefore, professionalism also entails respecting others around us. Respecting people and their perspectives, as well as being receptive to feedback and constructive criticism.

Responsibility

Taking responsibility for your actions is another essential component of a strong work ethic. This includes accepting responsibility for your faults and taking steps to fix them. If an employer sees this quality in you, they will be much more likely to forgive your transgressions. Their patience with you will be greater, knowing that your failings are a temporary situation, and are simply a part of your training cost.

Responsibility is also modelled by being proactive, by taking the initiative to do duties without being asked. A boss will always smile upon the employee who picks up the broom and sweeps the floor, when all the other workers just stand around and talk amongst themselves. Guess who the boss will promote when the time comes? Responsible people are reliable, dependable, and trustworthy, all of which are highly prized in the job.

Integrity

Integrity is a necessary component of a strong work ethic. It means remaining honest, ethical, and transparent in all areas of your work. You would have heard it said: “A man is only as good as his word” or “a woman is only as good as her word”. If your boss can’t trust what you say, they definitely won’t trust what you’ll do. People with integrity are distinguished by their strong moral values and dedication to doing the right thing, even if it is difficult or unpopular.

It’s found in the little things, like turning up on time. Being there when you said you would be. Not wasting other people’s time. And not claiming pay for time you didn’t work. These are the things that employers notice. People with integrity are known for their trustworthiness, which is critical when developing great relationships with coworkers and clients.

Accountability

Accountability is the final component of a strong work ethic. It’s hallmarked by taking ownership of your efforts and being accountable for the results. In order to overcome your problems you must first own them. By owning them you gain the power and authority to do something about them. This involves creating specific goals, tracking progress, and making necessary adjustments to guarantee successful accomplishment. Accountable people are proactive, results-oriented, and determined to achieve their goals.

In summary, developing a healthy work ethic requires numerous critical components, including professionalism, responsibility, honesty, and accountability. People who focus on these factors often become more productive, successful, and valued members of their workplace or organization.

Developing Your Work Ethic

Developing a healthy work ethic is critical to success in any job. Here are some tips I have found useful:

Self-Assessment

If you’re really serious about growing your work ethic into one of your strengths, you should begin by evaluating your existing work habits. Take a deep breath and take a good, long, hard look at yourself. Be honest with yourself and consider your strengths and weaknesses. Identify areas for improvement, things such as time management, workplace attitude or your ability to remain task focused. If you’re courageous enough, tell a trusted work colleague that you’re trying to improve your work ethic and ask them to be brutally honest with you. Once you’ve identified your areas in need of adjustment, use these insights to develop a strategy for improvement.

Goal Setting

“If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail” — Benjamin Franklin.

Setting objectives is a key step toward developing a strong work ethic. It’s critical to have specific, quantifiable goals to work towards. Break down your goals into smaller, more manageable activities. This will help you maintain motivation and attention and will keep you moving forward.

“If you don’t fail, you’re not even trying. To get something you never had, you have to do something you never did. If I’m going to fall, I don’t want to fall back on anything, except my faith. I want to fall forward. At least I figure that way I’ll see what I’m about to hit. Fall Forward!” — Denzel Washington

Time Management

Effective time management is essential for building a strong work ethic. Make a schedule and prioritize your responsibilities. Use calendars and to-do lists to keep organized. Avoid procrastination. Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can achieve today. Time waits for no one. Stay focused on your goals.

Continuous Learning

Success in developing a good work ethic requires ongoing learning. Stay up to date on industry trends and best practices. Attend conferences and workshops, study professional magazines, subscribe to industry blogs or email lists and look for mentorship possibilities. This will keep you motivated, increase your abilities and will give you the edge over you competition when it comes to the next job promotion.

Creating a good work ethic requires time and effort. Rome wasn’t built in a day and nor is your character perfected in a week. Good things take time and building a quantifiable, notable work ethic is akin to this. By applying yourself and following some of these suggestions, you will position yourself for success.

Challenges to Your Work Ethic

Image created with www.kittl.com

Developing a strong work ethic is not always simple. There are numerous challenges that can interrupt our development and potentially impede our capacity to remain focused and productive. Let’s examine some of the most prevalent difficulties to our work ethic and hopefully offer some solutions to overcome them.

Procrastination

“I never put off till tomorrow what I can do the day after.” –Oscar Wilde

Procrastination is something I have come to accept as a necessary evil. It’s a part of all of us, and is what I would call a form of coping mechanism to relieve an imbalance of stress. Someone once said I’d amount to nothing. I replied “Just wait and see”. Unfortunately though it’s still one of the most significant impediments to having a good work ethic.

It’s easy to become distracted by social media, emails, and other non-work-related activities. One method for overcoming procrastination is to set and stick to a schedule. This might help you stay focused and avoid distractions. Another method is to divide larger jobs into smaller, more manageable chunks, like the rungs of a ladder. If you break it down to a step at a time, eventually you’ll be at the top. This helps you avoid feeling overwhelmed and reduces the reliance on and prevalence of procrastination.

Burnout

Burnout is another issue that can affect work ethic. Take breaks and prioritize self-care to avoid burnout. I believe we are created in the image of God as triune beings. I believe we have three aspects that make up our being: Spirit, Soul and Body.

Imagine for a moment that each of these aspects are like three tanks that can be filled or emptied. For us to function at full capacity we need all three tanks to be full. If any one of these tanks is emptied, we will grind to a halt.

Empty your spirit and you’ll become lifeless, running on autopilot, directionless, lost, acting like a zombie. Empty your soul and you’ll be passionless, loveless, lacking motivation, depressed and unable to focus. Empty your body and you’ll become tired, lacking energy, and eventually even sick and diseased.

Keeping your tanks full is the antidote to all of these afflictions. This can involve eating healthy, getting some exercise, going for a walk, practicing mindfulness, or participating in hobbies outside of work. Keeping your spirit ablaze with the light and life that comes from a relationship with Christ. Joining a faith community. Doing things that refresh your soul: watching a sunset with a loved one or watching a funny movie. All of these things will give you greater resilience against burnout.

Setting reasonable goals and expectations will also assist in avoiding burnout. It’s critical to know when you need a break and even more important to actually take the time to refresh.

Distractions

Distractions can take various forms, such as emails, phone calls, and social media updates. Your boss might have a flexible phone policy set in your workplace. Whilst this is nice, you don’t want to be the guy or gal who is always found on your phone, as it smacks of a slack work ethic. To reduce distractions, switch off notifications and set aside a specific time to check your emails and messages. On top of this, creating a calm and organized workstation will help you to eliminate distractions and boost your productivity. Now you’ll be noticed by the boss for the right reasons.

Creating a strong work ethic can be a hard road to hoe, it’s difficult, but it’s doable. You can boost your productivity and achieve your objectives by recognizing and tackling typical issues like procrastination, burnout, and distractions.

Maintaining Your Work Ethic

Image created with www.kittl.com

Maintaining a good work ethic is just as vital as developing one. Let’s go over a few suggestions and tactics that will help you retain your work ethic.

Work-Life Balance

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is paramount if you desire to remain motivated and productive. It’s crucial to establish boundaries and prioritize your time between your work and personal life. One strategy to attain work-life balance is to establish and adhere to certain work hours.

The age-old ideal of 8+8+8=24 still rings true today. 8hrs of work, 8hrs of play and 8hrs of rest is the perfect daily balance in a perfect world. However, as we all know, this world is no longer perfect. Aiming for the ideal is still ideal. But the reality is that you’ll probably burn the candle at both ends, to make those ends meet. Do your level best to maintain a balance. This will help you prevent overworking and eventual burnout.

Stress Management

Stress can be a significant barrier to maintaining a healthy work ethic. It is critical to identify stressors in the workplace and devise stress-management measures. One successful strategy is to take numerous breaks or what I like to call micro-breaks during the day to refuel and refocus. Micro-breaks can be as simple as standing up from your desk and stretching. Or changing tasks from something physically demanding to complete the necessary paperwork before returning to the original task. Mindfulness, prayer and meditation can also aid with stress management and attention.

Motivation Techniques

Staying motivated is essential for having a good work ethic. Beyond the motivational posters often adorning workplace walls, setting realistic objectives and tracking your progress is one way to stay motivated. Popping some corks and celebrating minor accomplishments along the road will also help you stay motivated and interested. Finding a mentor or accountability partner, whether your boss or a co-worker, can also help you keep on track by providing support and encouragement.

Maintaining a good work ethic really does necessitate a dedication to work-life balance, excellent stress management, and continuous motivational strategies. Implementing these tactics will help you stay focused, productive, and motivated in your workplace.

Work Ethic in Different Scenarios

Image created with www.kittl.com

As someone who has worked in a variety of contexts, I can tell you that work ethic varies tremendously depending on the circumstances. Here are some observations I’ve noticed in various work environments:

Remote Work

Remote work can be an excellent approach to attaining a decent work-life balance. But it necessitates discipline and a solid work ethic. When working from home or a remote location, it might be more tempting to procrastinate or to become distracted by personal tasks or YouTube and Netflix! To combat this, make a schedule and keep to it. Creating a defined office space and eliminating distractions can also help you to remain focused.

Team Environments

The group dynamic in team settings can have an impact on work ethic. A good teamwork culture can increase individual accountability and push team members to work harder. There’s nothing like watching the AllBlacks play good rugby. As a team they work together like a well oiled machine.

The team as a whole, synergizes their individual efforts, extracting star performances out of each player, culminating in a winning performance that multiplies their individual efforts, to see the entire team work as one to thrash the competition. On the other hand, a poor teamwork spirit can result in decreased productivity and accountability. Do your best to encourage open communication and set clear expectations to help build a strong teamwork attitude.

Leadership Roles

As a leader, it’s on you to set a good example for your team in terms of work ethics. Leading by example can motivate teammates to work harder and be more productive. It’s also imperative to establish clear expectations and provide regular feedback to your team members, if you want to promote accountability. As a leader, I’ve seen that delivering constructive criticism and rewarding hard effort goes a long way toward developing a strong work ethic amongst team members.

When you need to bring correction, try using what I like to call the “Rebuke Sandwich”. It goes like this: Encouragement, followed by correction or rebuke, followed by encouragement. You’ll open them up and lower their defences with the first encouragement. Then you can hit them up the side of the head with your correction. Then from there you can quickly smooth it back over with the second encouragement. Before they even know what hit them, you’ll have them purring again like a Cheshire cat. And you’ll be able to walk away singing the Michael Jackson song… “You’ve been hit by, you’ve been hit by, a smooth criminal”. dun diggy diggy dun dun, diggy dun dun, diggy dun dun dun.

Overall, work ethic is a critical component of any employment. Individuals who understand how work ethic varies in different circumstances can design ways to maintain a strong work ethic and contribute to a productive work environment.

Measuring Work Ethic

Image created with www.kittl.com

Developing a strong work ethic is like money in the bank when it comes to success in any job. But how do you assess work ethics? Here are a few various approaches to assessing your work ethic:

Performance Reviews

Performance reviews, whilst almost universally despised, are an excellent technique to assess work ethic. Rather than seeing them as a threat to your existence in the workplace, see them as an avenue to assist you in understanding how well you are doing your work and more importantly, how you might improve.

During a performance review, your supervisor or boss will assess your job performance, including your work ethic. They will usually give you comments on areas where you can improve while also recognizing your talents and where you’re doing well. If they’re good at their job, they’ll probably use something like the “Rebuke Sandwich” I mentioned earlier on you, so when the first encouragement comes, steel yourself, get ready for the coming hits.

Self-Evaluations

Self-evaluation is another approach to assess your work ethic. It provides an opportunity to reflect on your work performance and evaluate your own work ethic. As mentioned earlier you should take a deep breath, take a good, long, hard look at yourself and assess your working habits, time management abilities, and productivity. By doing so, you can discover areas for improvement and come up with a strategy to improve your work ethic.

Peer Feedback

Feedback from colleagues, co-workers or teammates is a great tool to evaluate your work performance and work ethic. They can give you useful information about your work habits, time management abilities, and productivity. When this is offered spontaneously it can easily be seen as a personal attack. Regardless of the intent, you can utilize this feedback to improve your work ethic and become a more effective employee. See it as constructive criticism. You might need to filter out the destructive bits if the person offering the criticism is a real Karen.

Measuring work ethic will ultimately help you to cultivate a good work ethic. Performance assessments, self-evaluations, and peer feedback are all effective approaches to assess where you’re at. Using these strategies, you can identify areas for improvement and create a strategy to improve your work ethic.

Improving Your Work Ethic

As I’ve discovered from personal experience, developing a healthy work ethic is tantamount to professional success. Here are some ways that have helped me enhance my own work ethic:

Professional Development

One strategy to improve your work ethic is to prioritize your professional growth. This can include taking classes, attending conferences, or looking for mentorship possibilities. Investing in your own growth and development allows you to become a more skilled and knowledgeable worker, which will lead to increased job satisfaction, success and eventual promotion. If you’re running your own business, investment in yourself will eventually result in a healthier bottom line. You are your greatest asset!

Mentorship

Another strategy to improve your work ethic is to seek guidance from more experienced colleagues or an industry influencer. A mentor can offer direction, support, and advise as you progress in your profession. Learning from someone who has already achieved success in your industry allows you to obtain vital insights while also developing the skills and habits required for greater success.

“If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” — Sir Isaac Newton

Feedback Cultures

Additionally, establishing a culture of feedback in your business can potentially help you enhance your own work ethic. By soliciting feedback from co-workers and managers, you can identify areas for improvement and work to fix them. By providing feedback to others, you can further assist to foster a culture of continual growth and support at your company. Remember to utilise the “Rebuke Sandwhich” if you’re going to provide constructive criticism. And try not to overdo it, so that you don’t come off as a workplace busybody or worse, a real Karen. First and foremost ensure that you lead by example and drive a culture change.

Overall, strengthening your work ethic is a continuous process that takes commitment, effort, and a desire to learn and progress. You can acquire the habits and abilities required for work success by focusing on professional development, seeking mentorship, and developing a feedback culture.

The Future of Work Ethic

Image created with www.kittl.com

As the labor market evolves and technology develops, the importance of work ethic grows. Let me explain how technology and the changing employment market will more than likely affect work ethic going into the future.

Technological Impact

Technology has altered how we operate and will continue to do so. While technology offers numerous advantages, it can also have a negative impact on work ethic. For example, constant connectivity and access to work via technology can result in burnout and a lack of work-life balance. Furthermore, the usage of technology might cause distractions and a decline in productivity.

However, technology can also help to increase work ethic. For example, project management tools can assist individuals in staying organized and on track. Time-tracking software can help people better manage their time. Conversely, remote work technologies provide greater flexibility and may lead to better job satisfaction and improved work-life balance.

Evolving Job Market

The employment market is continuously changing, and it is critical to keep up with the current trends and expectations. In recent years, there has been a trend toward a more entrepreneurial mindset, with a focus on creativity and invention. This transition has resulted in an increased emphasis on self-motivation and self-discipline.

In addition, the gig economy has grown in popularity, with many people preferring freelance or contract work over regular jobs. This transition has resulted in an increased emphasis on self-management and accountability.

Overall, the future of good work ethics will be molded by technological advancements and a changing job economy. Staying informed and adaptive is crucial for success in an ever-changing market.

In Conclusion

All said and done, when it comes to work ethic there’s still nothing like the satisfaction that comes from knowing that you did your best. When you’ve worked hard, and have the results to prove it. The hard work brings the success you desired. The job satisfaction that comes as a result. The camaraderie, backslapping and high fives from team members who shared in the work and success, all make the efforts worthwhile. Build that great reputation among your coworkers and employers, resulting in better job chances and career progression. Work hard and the rewards will be yours in abundance.

And Then…

And Then

Curiosity killed the cat. Our susceptibility to suggestibility

Have you ever seen the movie “Dude Where’s My Car?” specifically the scene where they pull up to order some Chinese Takeaways. The hilarity ensues as one of the characters, Jesse (played by Ashton Kutcher) places his order. The Chinese woman on the other end of the intercom simply says: “And then”.

Agreeably he adds rice to his order of garlic chicken. She then continues with another: “And then”. Looking up at the menu he sheepishly suggests to his companions: “Want some wonton soup?” They all agree and with a look of determination and finality in his eyes, he adds the soup to his order. Unfazed, she simply continues with: “And then”. The fun continues again and again until eventually he destroys the intercom.

Where am I going with this? Nowhere really! I was just reminiscing about a funny movie scene that I watched some 20 odd years ago. But hey! It is the morning! And the morning is when I like to simply write whatever is on my mind. I afford myself the freedom of just flowing. I let my thoughts spill onto the keyboard, simply seeing where it all ends up. It just so happens that “And then” is currently on my mind.

So in the noble effort of redeeming the time. What can we learn from “And Then”? What nuggets of gold or pearls of wisdom can we extract from this tiny slice of the collective consciousness of populist culture?

Perseverance perhaps?

Yes, that’s a good start! The literary flatulence I could exhaust about that! No, no, no! It’s far too early in the morning for motivational diatribe.

Hmm, let’s see, less obvious, but far more consequential in its impact, might be the whole suggestibility of “And then”. Yes! That’s it!

Suggestibility! Now there is an interesting topic.

Just how suggestible are we really? How open are we to being influenced to buy things we didn’t initially want? To do things we didn’t initially intend to do? Say things we didn’t intend to say? Write things we didn’t intend to write?

I never intended to write this article, yet here I am. Was I influenced to write this article? Perhaps you could say I was influenced by a movie 20 odd years ago. But more importantly, what suggested the current remembrance of it? What triggered my brain to regurgitate the amusing memory of “And then”?

It’s a known phenomenon, that hanging a portrait behind an honesty jar, increases the rate of honest payers. It’s the psychological effect of knowing those eyes are watching. Regardless of whether they are alive or just printed on photo paper. Either way those eyes are watching, piercing the would-be thieves dishonest soul.

There it is right there. The suggestion that someone is watching, reminds the would-be thief that they might get caught. This in turn causes their return to morality and the restoration of their honesty. Its classic cause and effect.

Ohh the power of suggestion! It’s the power of the upsell, the downsell, the sideways sell. I’m tempted to grab a sound bite of “And then” and add it to my add to cart buttons, so that whenever someone clicks add to cart, it simply plays in the background. What a hoot that would be! Funny. Yes! But it most likely would result in a flurry of abandoned carts. Sorry, I digress. Back to the topic at hand. Suggestibility!

What did you want when you drove up at my window and clicked on the title of my article? You’ve placed your order of curiosity. But now I’m asking you “And then”?

What else will you order from my menu?

“And then”.

Perhaps a like?

“And then”.

Ohh yes! A follow.

“And then”.

Perhaps a few reads of my articles?

“And then”.

Maybe a purchase or two from my affiliate links.

“And then”.

And then what? What else do I want from you? And then, And then, And then, And then, And then!” Gosh I think it’s time for my morning coffee. Sorry to seem so cynical, but isn’t that just what society has become. A neverending treadmill of consumerism. Where we are all being collectively used for our purchasing power, our clicks, our attention and views.

Can I suggest this morning that you unplug from the suggestibility matrix for just a few moments. Simply go out of your way today to make someone else’s day. Send the “I love you” message. Order the flowers. When ordering your coffee, pay for the next person in line and leave enough change to tip the barista. Book the restaurant. Schedule the focused quality time. Call your Mom. And then?
